How do you paint plaster?

I've used regular paint to paint ceilings. I think that the main difference in 'ceiling paint' is that it is thicker. But I'm not positive. I didn't have any problems using regular paint. In fact, I briefly worked for a painter. I think he just used plain old paint for the ceilings also.

There is never a reason to paint new plaster in a pool. If you keep your pool water properly balanced, brush your steps and walls weekly, your plaster will last 10-15 years and never need painting or acid washing.

Melamine, or an oil based of a good brand name, and there are a few, I like BEHR. Don't cheap out, you'll pay in the end.

Yes, you can paint on whatever the plaster would have been attached to. If you use a 100% acrylic stain block primer to paint the surface, you can probably do it in one coat. If you need two coats, apply the second coat perpendicular to the direction you rolled or sprayed the first coat.

Use a water-based paint with higher mildew resistance and an eggshell or higher sheen. The higher sheens will ensure that condensation does not remain on the ceiling, allowing mildew to take hold.
