Well, my parents put polytex on the ceiling in the lounge room, dinning room and kitchen. It was starting to peel in places. The best way I've found to remove it is with a chisel. A paint scraper is too flexible, you want something more solid. And a heat gun helps a lot too.
But I must say be prepared for a long, slow process. But, it's worth it. Good luck.
