To remove any previous coating material and to have fresh wood that is ready to absorb.
If you have stripped your furniture and there is still too much stain showing on the surface you should first rough sand the project to remove any un-wanted blemishes and roughness then use household bleach followed by light sanding. Remember at this point the more you sand the more the old stain will be exposed.

You cannot. A glue stain, or any stain will show through clear varnish. It is always better to try and remove all stains or marks before varnishing. Almost every glue has a solvent that will remove it.

If the carpet glue is dense enough to affect your tile cement then you should remove it by sanding. -If it's only sparse then it won't matter.
Gentle , methodical sanding will work. You will have to refinish the sanded parts. If it can't be matched. sand the whole darned thing and paint it with a scrubbable paint. Solid wood furniture is too costly to just throw out.
Wet sanding may remove some glues in someconditions. However I've found dry sanding more effective with most adhesives. It depends very much on the exact 'glue' in use here.

There really isn't a way to remove a paint thinner stain from wood furniture. You must repaint or re-stain the furniture.
