How do you use a tattoo gun?

Power is fed from a supply unit to a handheld electromagnet tattoo machine. The cycle of power is fed into the magnets in opposite polarity thereby making a flexed armature bar move upwards and downwards at a fast rate of speed to which a needle is fixed upon. The speed of the needle's movement is regulated by the power supply, and the depth of same is determined by the placement of the tube. The overall tension of the machine is regulated by gap of same from the contact screw to the front spring and the angle of the contact screw plays a major role in the proper running of the machine.

When your tattooing there is no specific way to hold the machine. You have to play with it a little until you find what's comfortable for you. What helped me was setting the machine up without the needle and do the motions of running the tattoo until u find your comfort zone.

Most would prefer if you called it a machine, it doesn't shoot anything. It takes a long time to learn how to tune a Tattoo machine properly and to your style, but the main thing to look for is consistency in the residual image of the armature bar when it is running, if it seems to fluctuate then it is spending an unequal amount time in the up stroke or in the down stroke, u can usually achieve this by adjusting the point gap assuming the springs and machine are set up properly.
