In an earthquake the plates on the earth move and if they scrape past each other then a shock wave will be generated. If the crash into each other then they can sometimes form mountains and also let out a shock wave also one plate is forced under the other and that rock is melted down. If they pull apart then that also creates a shock wave and the gap left is filled with magma and forms a new part of the plate. Also it depends on the damage done to the things around it as to what is done to the environment.
Well usually the normal happens, but if the earthquake is REALLY strong, it may start squirting out lava.

The size of what natural disaster is not necessarily an indication of its intensity?

The size of a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or hurricane, does not always reflect its intensity. For example, a smaller earthquake with high intensity can cause more damage than a larger earthquake with lower intensity. Therefore, it is important to consider factors beyond just the size when assessing the impact of a natural disaster.
