Hi there,

Most Petroleum forms from the decay of sea borne micro organisms (MO) as apposed to coal which forms from the decay of Plant material.

The organic matter is covered over with sediment within large sea basins. Over millions of years the material is compacted and through various amounts of heating and pressure the oil is liberated from the organic rich rock (source rock). The oil can travel 100's -1000's of kilometres from the source rock along faults and fractures. The oil is caught in trap sites within sandstone type rocks (host rock/ reservoir). An oil well is sunk to collect the oil from the trap site.

Thats the basics.
