A better question would be the distance from the Sun as it is close to the center of all the planets' orbits. The Earth is also travelling around the Sun (at a distance of about 150,000,000 kilometers or 1 A.U.

As the Earth moves in its orbit the distances to the other planets change by up to two A.U. for the outer planets (Mars and beyond).

The approximate semi major axis of the orbits of the planets in kilometers from the Sun (use arithmetic to figure minimum and maximum distances from Earth):

  • Mercury 58,000,000
  • Venus 108,000,000
  • Earth 150,000,000
  • Mars 228,000,000
  • Jupiter 778,000,000
  • Saturn 1,433,000,000
  • Uranus 2,876,000,000
  • Neptune 4,503,000,000

Nobody has any idea. A comet is a tiny thing, and we can only see it during the small

part of its orbit when it's closest to the sun. If there's a comet that we can see over a

long period of time, then it's only because that one never gets too far from the sun.

The ones that are farthest from the sun (and from Earth) are the ones we can't see

at all, and have no idea where they are.

Perihelion is the point where the planet is closest to the Sun. The distance is equal to a(1-e) where a is the semimajor axis and e is the eccentriciy of the orbit. The opposite point is Aphelion where the distance is a maximum, a(1+e).

The semimajor axes and eccentricites of the planets' orbits are listed in many places, so all that is needed is to make a list of them and do that simple calculation.

For example the Earth's values are a = 149.6 million km and e = 0.0167, so the perihelion distance is 149.6 (1 - 0.0167) or 147.1 million km.

-- Earth is exactly 1 Astronomical Unit from the Sun. That's the definition of the

Astronomical Unit (AU).

-- Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, averages about 0.39 AU from the sun.

-- Pluto, which used to be the farthest planet and is still the farthest but is

no longer a planet, averages about 35 AU from the sun.

This depends on the comet. Some comets come fairly close to Earth, and some have come VERY close to the Earth. We believe that some comets have actually struck the Earth in the distant past.

Most comets spend the vast majority of their time far away for the Sun and the Earth, and it is a rare occurrence for more than one comet to be visible at one time.

How far away is Earth from the Solar System?

We are in the Solar system and a part of it. It's like asking "How far is France from Europe?" Yes... there is no way to judge that as mercury, venus, earth, mars, jup[iter, saturn, uranus and neptune are the planets located in the solar system. you could reference the distance from the earth to the sun though.
