Modern dance requires more flexibility than jazz dance.
Modern dance is different because it is basically a mix between jazz style dancing and ballet. It helps you become more flexible and ties in different steps from jazz, ballet, and not to mention it has many of its own very creative steps! The difference between modern and jazz dance, is that in modern dance the movements come from your own feelings and expression. Modern also has fundamentals in ballet and focuses on taking up space. Jazz dance is an older type of dance and the steps do not come from your feelings. It is faster paced and involves attitude. Both of these dance forms have traces in ballet.
Interperative Jazz .
I am assuming that what you are referring to as modern dance is modern jazz dance. This style of dance came from ballet.
Jazz can be any kind of upbeat series of movements. This might sound just like contemporary (modern) dancing but actually, try doing the 1970's Charleston (which is classified as jazz dance) to Like a G6! Modern dances are used with more modern songs and movements. The way modern dance is danced changes depending on the time. Does this make sense? In other words, in the 1920s the Charleston was considered a modern dance. Now that doesn't mean that doing a dance to Like a G6 wouldn't be jazz. It could be a variety of dance subjects. It really just depends on which type of dance best suits the movements and song. -Thank you!
according to ebiswagg in contemporary dance, when you dance it you dance from the inside and you make it soft and interprets whit the dance. you have to be good in ballet for you to dance the modern jazz, because its mostly your ballet technique you use.
Fred Traguth has written: 'Modern jazz dance' -- subject(s): Jazz dance, Exercise

Well... Contemporary Jazz is pretty much Jazz Lyrical. It is modern (contemporary) dance with some jazz in the mix. It is usually to soft or medium soft music and the choreography flows. It may have a Jazzy feel to it, or it may not. Contemporary Jazz has more options for themes, choreography, style, ETC. Personally, I believe that Contemporary Jazz or Jazz Lyrical is a fun class to take and teach!:)
Modern dance has evolved from ballet, which was first seen in the 1600's in kings and queens courts. Jazz dancing has since evolved and when you put ballet and jazz together you get modern dance. yah! lets go with that! lol
Music feeds dance. It tells our bodies what to do. The lyrics or mood of the song can tell us what emotion to portray or feel. The beat surges rhythm through our bodies. And vice versa, the dancer tells the story the music is missing and gives life and movement to each rhythm. It's a beautiful relationship and one could not easily go without the other.
