1) Artists can use direct stimulation. In painting you can achieve this with colors and agitated lines. In Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix, the forward diagonal movement from left to right and the atmosphere of somber colors against the smoke-filled background intensify our own feelings about the subject.
2) Types and symbols used in common usage. The dead child in Picasso's Guernica suggests terror and carnage as part of the artist's message.
3) Representations of emotional behavior in a work of art. In Goya's The Third of May, the look of terror in the highlighted prisoner's eyes, witnesses' shielding their eyes, clenched fists and gestures, shadowy bodies of fallen prisoners all provide this element in the painting.
4) Artist's can also provide evidence of their own feelings. Vincent Van Gogh used bold, swirling strokes and heavy, contrasting colors in The Starry Night to reflect his feelings
5)Artists can use direct stimulation, such as the excitement of a march or the lilting pattern of a dance tune.
6)Types and symbols that through common usage are charged with emotional meaning can also stimulate emotions. Examples the broken sword, the dying horse...
7) Artists can evoke emotional responses by providing evidence of their own feelings. In Beethoven's third symphony, the dynamic power and majesty of the music can be associated with the composer's idea.
8) Feeling can also be aroused by the representation of emotional behavior in a work of art. Example would be the look of terror on the face of the highlighted prisoner in colorplate 52.
We in the West (the East has its own set of connections, even if co-opting much from the West) have a set of associations with certain categories of color, musical types and symbols. We have semiotic/linguistic links that connect them to ourselves and to each other. (We call a piece of music "bright" or a story "muddy." The music in question is "seen" as "bright" for it is in a major key and played at a brisk, "lively" tempo. Music played in a minor key might make us feel more somber.)
They carry tremendous emotional/psychological weight.
Mood is achieved by the successful choosing and executing of elements, tones and symbols that, combined, summon a feeling from the viewer. It offers an opportunity to awaken and connect on an emotional level.
