Picasso was living in Paris when the Nazis bombed Guernica, Spain in April of 1937. This inspired him to begin work on the mural, Guernica, on May 1 of that year, which was finished by the middle of June, 1937.

On April 26, 1937 the defenseless little town of Guernica was bombed. This angered Picasso and he started to make lots of sketches, which led to the big painting of that name. It was exhibited in Paris in July 1937. This means three months' work.

Guernica is the name of a small town in the way north of Spain that was bombed by the German's, with Franco's permission (leader of Spain) during World War II. Hitler wanted to test some new bombs and Franco said he could try it out on this village/town. The people had no idea - thus, Picasso's painting of the horrors of war, and the horror of a leader who would permit that kind of atrocity to take place in his own country.
