- A CT Scan needs contrast dye. Contrast dye is given to show up certain organs and also protect the kidneys. The dye can either be given in liquid form mixed with a tiny bit of fruit juice or pop (instructions will be given to you by your pharmacist if you are having liquid contrast dye) or the contrast dye may be given by IV at the imaging department. Depending on what time you are having your CT Scan you do need to fast. Example: If your CT Scan is in the morning then you can have breakfast, but nothing but LOTS of water during the whole day and another 2 litres of water before you go for your test. You may have other liquids only during fasting such as tea; fruit juice, but be sure you drink plenty of water! If you have future questions phoning any pharmacist will help you put your mind at rest.

If there is a risk involved with fasting contact the place you will be having the CT scan done and ask them. A reputable Imaging center or Hospital will not mind you calling and asking questions. The person answering the phone may not be able to answer your question but just ask for a technologist or Doctor Who can.
