The answer to this question depends on the grade of mesh, and also on how fine the mesh is. The most common mesh used is a No. 12 mesh, which is much finer than, say, a No. 8 mesh. The lower the number of the mesh, the more the screen allows ink to flow through. Conversely, the higher the mesh count, the finer you can print, e.g., a 16-count mesh.
As for how long a screen will last depends on how well you take care of it -- it can last for a lifetime if you clean and store it properly. Some mesh is made of silk and other fabrics; others are made of steel.
