This depends on:

  • brand of paint
  • Additives used in the paint to prevent this
  • Type of paint used
  • Quality and type of prep work
  • Waxing and maintenance done to prevent this

The old Lacquer paint used to Oxidize starting immediately and noticeably. We used to wax as soon as the paint set up to prevent this.

Generally damage from this process is slower for all current paints.

The lasting durability of your newly painted car is directly related to how much time, effort, and quality the painter puts into his work, and materials.

A painter who properly sands and treats the surface, primes for new paint, sands between coats of paint, and puts a proper clearcoat will last you five years or more before standard wear starts to show. It will last even longer, if you properly maintain it with regular washing and waxing.

A poor paint job may only last six months to two years.

If you're looking to have your car resprayed, be extremely wary of any painter who claims they can have it back to you in a matter of days. Paint takes a long time to work with properly. Expect to be renting a car for at least a week.
