The number of coats per gallon depend on the size of the area you are going to paint. Most paint cans have the area of coverage per gallon printed somewhere on the label. Divide the area of coverage by the area you are going to paint to determine how many coats you can apply.

How much is needed for one coat? Of what? A door? An entire barn? Most paint covers 350 to 400 square feet a gallon. There is no way to say how much is needed for one coat until you define what it is you are coating.

Cost? Paint is very, very much a case of "You get what you pay for". It can be purchased for $9.00 a gallon or $32.00 a gallon. The higher cost paint will cover much better, look nicer and last longer. As a rule "flat" finish is least expensive, "gloss" the most expensive.

How many square feet does a gallon of primer plus paint cover?

Anywhere from 300-500 square feet depending on the thickness/thinness of the paint, how many coats you're putting on from a single can, and how large the surface is you're painting. However, 300-500 square feet is an approximate average of how much a gallon of paint should cover.

How many coats of white paint is needed to cover a dark surface of up to 600 sq ft?

The answer will depend on the quality of the paint, the coverage of the paint and the preparation of the surface being painted. The Lowe's paint calculator says primer covers 200 square feet per gallon, and paint covers 350 square feet per gallon. Assuming for a dark surface you need at least 2 coats, and you are only using paint and not primer, and not knowing the type of paint, I would start with 3 gallons to be sure you have enough for 2 coats, and then see how it looks. If you need three coats, you might still have enough.

How many gallons of paint does it take to paint 600 square two coats?

well being a two story home not knowing exact size i would tell you bout 20-25 gallons without ceilings go to affordablepainters.biz to get a quote Figure basically 300 Sq Ft per gallon. This will change depending on how porous the siding is and how many coats you are applying. Paint companies recommend two coats for a first rate job.
