The first satellite made and launched successfully from an Indian rocket was Rohini 3 launched in April 1983. Since then India has launched a number of sattelites both it's own and for other countries as well as designing and operating satellites launched by the European space agency.
During the 1990s, the United States led the world in the number of artificial satellites launched into space. The country sent up 14 satellites.

India has launched 9 navigation satellites under its Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). These satellites provide positioning information over India and the surrounding region.
