It depends on how popular the artist is. If you study art you'll find that many painters didn't become popular until after their death. In modern times it's a matter of whether you peek the interest of someone that can get your art into a "showing". It's a tough profession to get into. My cousin made good money pencil drawing (to perfection) actors (mainly) for corporative offices and got about $5,000 - $10,000 per picture. He did Marlon Brando (he looked so real), Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe to name many. It depends what the art world is looking for at the moment. The sad thing is my cousin wasn't in it for just the money and found when he was drawing on contract he lost the joy of his artwork so he got out of it and now draws at his own comfort level to enjoy it and what drawings he has are snapped up.
