Walmart is a big corporation. It exists to make as much money as possible. You can bet that in some way, direct, or indirect, they would only close a department for financial reasons. I do not know the specifics at Walmart, but here are some guesses as to why they would close the craft and sewing department: a) it is not making money b) they can use the same space in some other way to make more money c) it's expensive or hard to find the right workers d) the department is profitable in some cities and not in others, and it's cheaper to run all the stores in the same way e) they are choosing not to compete (with Joann's etc.) for some reason If I had to guess, I'd choose B.
