It depends allot on where you want to go and what you want to do. if you go to a school like UTI or the likes you are looking to pay 38,000-45,000 depending again on what courses you want to take. Or the much cheaper way to get the knowledge is through community collage. then there is the investment in GOOD tools and a toolbox. Don't let anyone tell you, you NEED to buy a snap-on, mac or the likes either a Craftsman box works just fine have been using mine for about 8 years with no problems. Changed the locks once because I lost the keys. Hope that helps. Happy Holidays

That depends on how good of a mechanic you want to be!

If all you want to do is replace parts, the cost of the tools and some training.

If you want to be a diagnostic technician, the cost of the training is ongoing.

a good school like UTI, will give you the basics. Don't take the attitude that you know it all, it all changes daily.

A really good diagnostic tech can earn in excess of 100K! You will have to know how to track down bad grounds, errant signals and reprogram vehicle computers and all the control modules on a vehicle. These are all vehicle specific and it costs to be able to download this information. The tools that you use change every year and usually need to be updated every year for 2K up per tool.

Look at some of the answer boards on the web, the tech gets $23.00 to answer a question, just how much of that he gets to keep, I have no idea.

You need to ask yourself how much you want to put into it, that is how much you will get out of it. Training classes to keep you updated are held at night and are not free. You will need to take every class you can to keep up with technology. You will find the same group of core people at these classes, they are your peers and the others are just part changers that think they are techs.
