Teddy wasn't from Mississippi. He was born in Philadelphia, PA. He started his singing career at a church in Philadelphia and attended school in Philly up to the 11th grade, after which he dropped out to pursue a music career. He was a member of several local bands in the area, and was discovered in 1970 by Harold Melvin (of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, another Philly group). Their first successful hit with Teddy was "I Miss You", a song that was also produced in Philadelphia, PA. It's still a classic.
