A build up of stress.
As the plates move past each other or one moves under another, the edges of the plates get locked up. This is because the edges of the plates are not smooth but jagged. Eventually so much stress builds up that the plates "pop" past each other releasing a huge amount of energy in the form of an earthquake
It is called the Ring of Fire The "circum-Pacific seismic belt" is the actual name. It is also nicknamed the "Ring of Fire". The area is along the rim of the Pacific Ocean, and 81% of the world's earthquakes occur there. The area extends from Chile, in South America, north to New Zealand.
No it is not. In fact these states are the ones that have the most and strongest earthquakes Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and California. The reason that you hear about California so much is because California it is right by the fault line. So the plates collide mostly on the border of the US, which is California.
