A build up of stress.

As the plates move past each other or one moves under another, the edges of the plates get locked up. This is because the edges of the plates are not smooth but jagged. Eventually so much stress builds up that the plates "pop" past each other releasing a huge amount of energy in the form of an earthquake

What is the ring of fire how is it related to the frequent occurrence of earthquakes?

The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped area in the Pacific Ocean basin where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. This is due to the presence of several tectonic plate boundaries along the Ring of Fire, leading to intense seismic activity. The Pacific Plate is particularly active along this region, causing the frequent earthquakes.

How is it related to the frequent occurrence of earthquake?

Earthquakes occur due to the movement of tectonic plates in the Earth's crust. Areas located along plate boundaries, such as the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, are more prone to frequent earthquakes. The release of built-up stress along fault lines in these regions leads to repeated seismic activity.

Why is it the Philippines is prone to earthquake?

The Philippines is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity. The country sits on the boundary of several tectonic plates, leading to the occurrence of earthquakes. Additionally, the complex geological setting of the Philippines makes it prone to earthquakes.

Why do earthquakes occur in the Philippines?

The Philippines is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates. The country sits on the boundary of several major tectonic plates, leading to the occurrence of earthquakes as these plates shift and grind against each other.

Location of frequent earthquakes at the subduction zone?

Frequent earthquakes occur at subduction zones where one tectonic plate is being forced beneath another. These earthquakes are caused by the intense pressure and friction between the plates as they move against each other. Examples of subduction zones with frequent earthquakes include the Pacific Ring of Fire where the Pacific Plate is subducting beneath other plates.

What is a zone of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in Pacific Ocean is called?
