They lived in SW usa, so they could build strong homes using the natural clay found in the environment. Many people living in dry environments use clay to build. People living in wet environments dont use clay, because it would wash away too quickly.
They can use geometry by using angles and certain polygons/polyhedra.

Paper Clay is any clay fine enough for an artist to use, and cellulose (paper) fibres added to give strength to and reduce the weight of the clay. The finished object is air-dried.

You should use air dry modeling clay that is moist and ready to use. Either that or I would use any clay that you would fire in a kiln. Otherwise, It probably won't be food safe. It depends on what you will be puttuing in it.

Clay is a naturally occurring substance with many uses, the use to which you are going to put it would decide how you would prepare it.
