In the beginning of the studio system studios held a monopoly on the production and distribution of movies and cranked out upwards of 1200 films a year that were low budget, often silent films. In the early 1960s the U.S. government changed the laws on the studio system and restricted studios from owning the entire process (production, distribution). This caused studios to rethink they're strategies and work to create better, more profitable films.
