This vehcile uses a serpentine belt. The belt tension is set automatically by the tensioner. If the tensioner is stuck and will not apply tension to the belt then it is defective and needs replacing.

What is a reasonable cost to replace a 1998 Honda Civic LX alternator?

Changing an alternator isn't GENERALLY a difficult process. I'd estimate around an hour of labor - so whatever they charge per hour plus the cost of the alternator. Possibly a couple a hundred bucks.

With a few hundred different ones for different applications pick a price. You need to state the year make model and engine size.

How much is a reasonable price for getting the timing belt changed on a 97 ford escort?

Obviously it depends entirely on who does the work, and the area you live. But i'd guess a couple of hundred bucks, give or take. While you're having the belt changed, you might wanna consider having them check that whole belt region. Perhaps the tensioner needs replacement too, or the water pump.

How much does an alternator cost?

Depends on the year, make, model, and engine size. They can run anywhere from $30 to several hundred. Typical alternator with internal voltage regulator will be about 80$, But when you return old one you get $20 back. So if returned, about $60 (give-or-take $10). This doesn't apply in all cases, obviously; the make and model of the vehicle is a factor. Those are fairly reasonable prices for the part itself assuming the vehicle isn't an antique or something where the part may have to be custom-made.
