It can depending on how much of charge that battery. How long it will run without the alternator also depends on the battery charge.

One way to tell if your alternator is going bad is to start it up, preferably at night, and turn on the lights. Then turn on the the heater fan. If your lights get dimmer when you turn on the fan the alternator could be going bad. A common problem with an alternator that is insufficiently charging is having to jump start your car even after you have run it beforehand. The best way to test it is with a volt meter. You should read 13 to 14 volts across the battery while the engine is running, if you read less your alternator is insufficiently charging. Another way to test it is to take it to a parts store for a free test.
it may be your alternator going bad that is what happened to mine, and i just changed the alternator, and it fires right up, to check your alternator start your car if it will start, and while its running take off your positive battery cable, if it dies your alternator is bad if it stays runnign your alternator is good, then it could just be your compression, or something in your gas.
No It will not hurt a car to jump start with a bad Alternator. Only if you put the cables on backwards. Jeff 25 years Automotive Tech It has been my experience that although you can jump-start a car with a bad alternator and drive it, the car will eventually die while you are driving (usually in a spot where there is no one around to help you jump start it again). I recommend a jump start and then go to an auto parts store to buy another alternator.
low voltage,bad battery or alternator

When your battery does not get charge.
If bearings go bad they will "squeal"
most likely the start of the alternator going bad.

A bad alternator is separate from the tranny. Two unrelated issues.
Normally this is the bearings going bad.
There are a few reasons why your alternator might keep going bad such as rusty latches under the car. You may also have leaks, dents, or parts that need to be replaced on the vehicle that are effecting your alternator.
it could possibly be the battery or the alternator check both. from the way it sounds that the alternator is going out and is making the battery work to hard and causeing it to go bad it could possibly be the battery or the alternator check both. from the way it sounds that the alternator is going out and is making the battery work to hard and causeing it to go bad
Check for a bad fusable link at alternator
Start the truck then disconnect the battery if it's still running the alternator is good
bad battery, and bad alternator not keeping it charged - also bad connections to the battery or loose wire connections on the alternator.
