He invented things because he wanted to let people know what he could do and how smart he was. Also he invented things that we know use like helicopter, submarine, cannon, machine gun and a whole lot of other stuff too.
Leonardo was in Venice at the time and the city of Venice was threated being invaded by the Turkish navy. (Keep in mind that Venice is a city surrounded by and built on the water).
Leonardo presented himself as a military engineer and invented the Scuba diving gear as a solution for the Venitian army, so they could have an army of underwater soldiers to fight the Turks. Unfortunately, the Venitians did not implemented Leonardo's idea. They thought it was too wild and crazy.
That is one example of how beyond his time Leonardo really was. It wasn't until centuries later that people thought that the idea of diving underwater with the help of an oxigen gear wasn't a crazy idea.
Da Vinci had seven principles of life. The first was "curiosita" and this was an insatiably curious approach to life and a unrelenting quest for continuous learning. This fueled his genius all of his life. This seeking of truth in all things also lead had him going beyond the boundaries of his time and place. The quest for knowledge was his door to freedom. He carried a notebook with him all of his life and would write down ideas, questions, impressions, and observations ( 7,000 pages exist today of his notes). His next principle was to test knowledge through experience and to learn from the mistakes. He never stopped doing this even when he failed. If a person today just followed his first two principles he/she could accomplish so as much or more in his/her life as Da Vinci.
He did sketch the precursor for our scuba gear.
