I heard an interview with ASH one time where he stated that he'd asked Sarah to marry him a number of times, but it is she who does not see the point of formal marriage.

According to IMDB, they met when ASH was 28, so that puts their relationship around the 29 year mark (he's 57 in 2011), and that's a heck of a lot longer than many formal marriages. They have two grown daughters from their relationship.

I note that in various publicity photos you can see that they both wear a ring on the ring finger of their left hand, so at some point they must have decided a public reflection of their relationship was appropriate.
