Where I live the shop is required to have a repair license to operate, the mechanics do not.
No, but with the complex technical nature of today's auto mechanics a high school education would at least assist you in the necessary schooling required to be a competent mechanic.

ASE is the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. An ASE certified Mechanic has been instructed and tested on how to perform maintenance on a vehicle. There are different areas of specialization for ASE certifications for different systems on a car. ASE certified mechanics aren't necessarily better mechanics but they take the job seriously to get certified and if you have a choice you should choose a mechanic with an ASE Certification. The person asked what is an ase MASTER mechanic? This specifically means the mechanic has passed all or nearly all certifications (tests) available in a test series (ie: auto, med truck, collision, etc ...) and the mechanic must also document at least two years of hands-on work experience. For example in the auto series there are 8 tests (A1 through A8) required before you are considered a master mechanic.

"An auto mechanic" is correct, and "a auto mechanic" is not. "Auto" begins with a vowel - typically, these will be preceded by "an" rather than "a".

A good mechanic should be ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified. ASE is a professional program that tests auto technicians on their knowledge and experience in several different areas pertaining to auto and truck repair. This would be a good way to know if your mechanic is qualified to repair your transmission.
Auto transmission problems may be caused by a number of issues including wrongly poorly installed parts. The best thing to do is seek help from your local mechanic.
enviroment for auto mechanic?
From the questioner: I couldn't find the dip stick, went to Advance Auto Parts & clerk said there wasn't one, this was a model that required dealer or mechanic service to add auto transm fluid. I was stunned! So I posted this question later in the evening. Next day, I went to an oil change center & they showed me where it was and refilled it. So..no need for an answer now!
