Yes, in the 1850's. Slave states in the United States were afraid that progressive elements would ultimately be successful in dismantling slavery if newly admitted states in the young and growing nation were admitted either as "free" states or as states that could choose slavery or not. They were fighting battles nationally to protect the 'balance of power' between the slave states and the non-slave states in congress. The economic value of slavery in the South was significant and that value blinded many to the morality of the issue. There were even churches that supported slavery and people wrote that The Bible supported slavery because slaves are not uncommon in the Bible.
In modern times no political party in the United States favors slavery and the nation works against slavery in every instance.
