No, it is not. Sterling Silver is actually an alloy composed of mostly Silver, somewhere around 90%, give or take a few, with the rest being a metal like Copper in order to make it stronger and more durable. Fortunately, Silver is more strong than other precious metals such as Gold and thus does not need as much reinforcement. One may come to find that many actual pieces of silverware or bowls of Silver are actually Sterling because of the durability. Personally, this is my favorite metal because of its beauty and strength, even if it is not really a "Pure Metal".

What exactly is 925 sterling silver?

Pure silver is extremely malleable and can be easily damaged. It also softens over time even at room temperature. To avoid these problems and increase the life-span of your silver jewellery other metals are added to the pure silver - creating alloys which protect the silver jewellery from scratching and damage.925 sterling silver jewellery is actually a combination of 92.5% silver and usually 7.5% copper. The beneficial properties gained by adding copper have made 925 sterling silver extremely popular with a host of silver craftsmen. The inclusion of copper, or occasionally a similar copper-like substitute, helps to enhance your silver jewellery and does not in any way detract from its quality.Nearly all 925 sterling silver jewellery we sell is hallmarked with a 925 stamp. The hallmark is an assurance to you that all of our silver is of the highest quality. Please note that some items are excluded from the legal requirements to hallmark and therefore these items may not be hallmarked.

How can you tell if your necklace is real 925 silver?

To identify the real 925 silver necklace we have to know some techniques. 1. Magnets have no effect on silver - just as they have no effect on gold or platinum. But if you find that the jewelry is attracted to the magnet, then it will be clear to you that it is not made of real sterling silver. 2. Rub the jewelry using a soft white cloth. If you find any black marks on the cloth, then you can be sure that it is made of real sterling silver. 3. Nitric acid has no effect on real 925 sterling silver. If the jewelry is made of real sterling silver, the part on which you drop the nitric acid will appear creamy in color, otherwise, if fake, it will appear green or lose their color. 4. Real sterling silver shouldn't smell. If it does, it is because there is too much copper in it. 5. Real sterling silver jewelry will have markings such as "Ster," "925" or "Sterling Silver" in a hidden area. If you don't see such a marking, be wary of it immediately. 6. The price that you paid for your jewelry is a good indicator as 925 silver is much more expensive than alternatives. So by these above techniques, you can check your necklace is real or fake.
