The state is mostly east of the river. The river was used to establish the western boundary of the state, but the course of the river has changed since then and there are now portions of Mississippi that are west of the river and portions of Arkansas and Louisiana that are east of the river.
One of the easiest ones to find is Davis Island a little southwest of Vicksburg, MS: the river cut through a bight and "stranded" part of Mississippi on the west side of the main course of the river.
