The title of Renaissance Man is almost completely true of Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (March 6, 1475 - February 18, 1564). Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer. His versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered as the embodiment of the cultural and intellectual revival which began in the thirteenth century. Another contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man was Michelangelo's rival, and fellow Italian, Leonardo da Vinci.

Spain emerged as a significant rival following the union of the Spanish crowns and their exploration and colonization efforts in the New World, which posed a threat to England's interests.
