I have always used a kneaded eraser, it takes a while to clean up an entire drawing, but it works.
spray it lightly all over with hair spray and let it dry. then you can handle it without smudging

I've always used some kind of hairspray, which stops the pencil from smudging and probably preserves it too. This also works on charcoal and pastil pieces too ^^ Hope this helped XD
