The Kansas-Nebraska allowed the citizens of these two states to vote as to whether to allow slavery. The Republicans wanted to disallow slavery in all new states. Many wanted to abolish slavery in all the states, but this was not in their platform.
In 1858, the Republican Party was still a very new entity. It was formed in the early 1850's from the break up of the Whig Party. The slavery issues split the Democratic Party and destroyed the Whig Party. In Illinois, the rallying cry of Illinois Republicans centered on two national evils. They were called the "Two Despotisms-Catholicism and Slavery. While slavery was an issue in the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, little in those debates centered around Catholicism.

the spread of slavery in the west
Taxes, society, immigration, and the economy were the issues that divided the party into three groups. Those three have divided and created a lot of commotions for the Republican party. This thus created divisiveness inside the party and thus for the country as a whole.
