The cause is a change in how the Earth is tilted on its axis. The tilt of the Earth on its axis during the course of its trip around the Sun changes during different times of the year.

When it is summer in North America, the Northern Hemisphere is the closest to the sun, making the Southern Hemisphere the farthest away from the sun. The opposite true during the other half of the year.

The world is a globe and it spins around on an axis, so almost everywhere can get sunlight except the ones that are very cold like Antarctica or somewhere else. Those places only have 2 seasons. The Equator is always the closest to the sun, and as such, there are really no discernible seasons unless you use rainfall as a distinction. In parts of the Equator, there is a "wet season" and a "dry season." But in other parts which are surrounded by ocean, it is rather wet all year round.
