The Sistine Chapel was opened for public viewing on October 31, 1512. All of the dignitaries and artists in Rome came to see what Michelangelo had done. Vasari writes that what they saw was 'a lamp for our art which casts a broad luster enough to illuminate the world.' Condivi wrote that he was 'above the reach of envy' and at the age of 37 Michelangelo became known as the Divine Michelangelo.
