It may be nice for some to romanticize a strong spirit not belonging to a man but she was happily married. If you study her life, she insisted in the famous "cruel promise" letter that Putnam set her free if she was not happy after one year of marriage. She never exacted that promise.

In fact, she was friends with George's wife, Dorothy Binney Putnam, before she married George. It was by an incredible mutual agreement that Dorothy and George parted so that George and Amelia could be together.

The story is documented in the book "Whistled Like a Bird" by one of Putnam's granddaughters, Sally Chapman. (The book chronicles the very intersting life of Dorothy Binney.)
