Not much really. It's main purpose was to see if things could be launched into orbit and if they would remain functional up there.
Short answer: the Soviet Union launched three Sputnikmissions (Sputnik 1, 2 & 3) and Russia launched two Sputnik missions (Sputnik 40 & 41). The Soviet Union launched a further five Korabl Sputnik missions (Korabl Sputnik 1 to 5). All other Sputnik missions are the West's brainchild. The Soviet Union called the very first artificial satellite from October 4th 1957, Sputnik. Due to secrecy a lot of Soviet spacecraft were not publicly named and Western newspapers named different Soviet spacecraft Sputniks. When they reached high Sputnik numbers they realised that the Soviet Union already called their indefinite satellites for Cosmos. The Vostok spacecraft were tested unmanned or with dogs and dummies (Ivan Ivanovic) as Korabl Sputniks (Sputnik ship) as Soviet designation. Earth's Moon is called as Lunar.
The Russian craft Luna 3 photographed the moon's hidden side for the first time on 7 October 1959, ten years before the first lunar landing. A total of 29 images were taken.
They thought they were lunar "seas" like the oceans on earth. They are actually vast plains. But even today, they are still called "seas".Many early astronomers thought the dark spots on the moon were "seas". That is how all the lunar maria got their name, such as "Mare Tranquillitatis" which translates into "The Sea of Tranquility".
The first Lunar module was called the Eagle.
The first American spacecraft to land on the moon was called Apollo 11. It landed on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969, with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin becoming the first humans to walk on the moon.
The first American lunar probe was Pioneer 0, launched on August 17, 1958. However, it failed to reach the Moon and burned up in the Earth's atmosphere. The first successful American lunar probe was Ranger 7, which flew by the Moon and transmitted images back to Earth in 1964.
The Lunar module was called the Eagle.
Apollo 11 consisted of the command module that was known as Columbia and the lunar module that landed on the Moon was called Eagle.

The first American satellite to reach the moon was Ranger 7, launched on July 28, 1964. It successfully transmitted high-resolution images of the lunar surface back to Earth before crashing into the moon.
The first American lunar probe was Pioneer 4, launched on March 3, 1959. Its main goal was to achieve a close flyby of the Moon, providing valuable data on radiation in space and the lunar environment. Pioneer 4 successfully passed within 37,600 miles (60,500 kilometers) of the Moon, making it the first U.S. spacecraft to escape Earth's gravity and travel to another celestial body.
the first lunar landing
Apollo 15 was the first lunar landing to use the LRV, or Lunar Roving Vehicle, affectionately called the moon buggy.
The program was called Apollo, and the missions designated with a number. Apollo 11 was the first to land on the moon. The command and lunar modules were all given different names by their crews.
A lunar trench is called a Rille (the German word for groove).
