Who was the female teacher who fought off a machete-wielding man?
This was a primary-school nurse called Lisa Potts, from Wolverhampton in the English Midlands. She protected a class of small children from attack by a paranoid schitzophrenic in July 1996- the attacker, a black man called Horrett Campbell who lived in a block of flats overlooking the school, invaded a 'Teddy Bear's Picnic' event that was being held at the St. Luke's Primary School in the Blakenhall area of Wolverhampton, and proceeded to lash out indiscriminately with a machete. Lisa Potts's arm was almost severed in the attack during her efforts to protect the children in her care- she also suffered severe injuries to her other arm, her head and back. Four children were injured, but there were no fatalities, thanks largely to her bravery. Following the attack, she suffered from severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. She was widely hailed in the British national press as a heroine, and the following year was presented with the George Medal by Queen Elizabeth II for her selfless courage- the highest civilian award that can be given in the UK. In 2000, she was awarded £68,000 compensation- widely criticised as being inadequate in the face of what she went through, especially given the fact that libel payouts at the time were often for far greater sums than this. Lisa Potts went on to begin work as a counsellor in 2001. She has also founded a charity called Believe To Achieve, based around schools in Wolverhampton, which aims to raise confidence and self-belief in children. She published her autobiography Behind The Smile in 1998. Recently, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Wolverhampton. She is now married, and is known as Lisa Webb. Horrett Campbell was sentenced to be detained indefinitely at a secure psychiatric hospital, where he remains to this day. He was thought to have been stimulated to launch the attack by the shootings at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland, which took place 6 months previously- press cuttings and articles about the Dunblane tragedy were found stuck to the walls of his flat. Under questioning, he said that he had been being sent messages that the schoolchildren were evil, and had to be killed- at the time he launched the attack, he was wearing a slouch hat with two nails fixed into the top to resemble horns, and the words 'Little Devils' written on the front.
