Two Riders and Reclining Figure/Study for improvisation V (is, or are) the only known Kandinsky painting that was (or were) known to be painted on both sides. However, it was a common practice among hungry artists of early 1900s to paint on fiber board - on both sides, and then split them up and sell them as separate pieces. The above mentioned Two Riders and Reclining Figure/Study for improvisation V was one of these paintings that were painted on a fiber board, and subsequently presented as gift to two separate individuals. In mid '90s, a NY auction house (probably Christy's) got a hold of both pieces, and sold it for around $20 million US Dollars, including commission. I'm sure there were other two-sided paintings by Kandinsky that switched hands privately, and I am convinced of this because the play 6 DEGREES OF SEPARATION came out long before the auction that took place in 2005. I will consult my genius friend Kalli to make sure that the facts are straight.

It's not a quote from Kandinsky; it's just a description of the Kandinsky painting, which sets up the main theme of the play (chaos and order, two sides, two faces, of the same thing). And it's actually Paul who says it (Will Smith's character), not Flan (Sutherland's character), although Flan/Sutherland may have repeated it during the course of the play/movie. Anyway, the line is "The Kandinsky! -- that's a double. It's painted on either side," during the scene in which Paul bursts into their apartment, all bloodied up. And then again at the very end of the play: "The Kandinsky's painted on two sides." Sutherland's character does claim to quote Kandinsky during a cocktail party and I've been looking for the exact verbiage myself. It goes something like this: "It is clear that the choice of object that is one of the elements in the harmony of form must be decided only by a corresponding vibration in the human soul."
