Monet was born in November of 1840, he started at the Secondary school or arts in in April 1851. During this time he began to paint and use charcoal on his studies. He also received art lessons from Jacques-Louis David at this time. Many of his paintings were painted around 1870-1874.

At about the age of 15 the artist Eugene Boudin became his mentor and friend.
