A Bachelor of Science Degree in Graphic Design is 8 semesters of traditional study.
The time it takes to complete depends alot on:
1. Your grades. (must consistantly have a C or higher in all courses)
it takes more time on the calendar to have to take a class over again.
2. Whether or not you are a part time or full time student.
3 If you are in an accelerated program
4. If you have life experience that can transfer into college credit.
A BS Degree in Graphic Design could take anywhere from 3 to 6 years to complete.
If the program is taken at the associates level, it will take approximately two years provided the student takes the program as prescribed by the college. If the program is taken at the bachelors level, it will take approximately four years.
Right off the bat I can tell you that it's very expensive and time consuming. Graphic design isn't one of those easy careers that you can just breeze by. Materials aren't exactly very expensive but you will need to buy plenty and you will need to keep them in stock for personal use throughout your whole career. Computer programs are obviously not cheap (unless you can get a copy) and not to mention maintain your hardware running properly which can also cost plenty of cash if you don't already know someone who can fix your stuff for free. All in all; it's a long, difficult and expensive career but it's well worth the years of school and money. The tuition to become a graphic designer at private colleges and universities can run as high as $40,000 to $50,000 a year. In general, the tuition can run between $21,000 to $30,000, depending on the concentration.
You can teach yourself to be a graphic designer in however long you want. Just get some good books on the topic, with strong emphasis on typography and communication, also art history.
If you go to school for a degree in the field, you can get a 2 year associates degree, or a 4 year bachelors degree. I would personally suggest a 4 yeas bachelors degree if you really want to be a good designer. After that, you can chose to continue for you masters degree, or get a job in the field.
The graduation time for graphic design school depends on what sort of program you are enrolled in. A typical 4-year undergraduate program will take between 3.5 and 6 years to complete, depending on the amount of courses you take each semester. A Master's program will take, on average around 2-2.5 years to complete.
There's no real regulation on it...it's not necessarily dangerous to do graphic design, so whatever the age they allow kids in your state to work would be okay.
