For example if your purchases came to $40 and you are asked if you would like 'cash back', you could say, ask for $10. So your debit card will be charged with $40+$10 and the cashier will give you $10. Hopefully no one thinks it's free money. It could possibly be abused if the cashier charges your card for more than what you asked for, hoping it won't be noticed when you see your statement. So for example in the above the cashier could add 20, so your card is charged for 60, then they give you $10 and pocket $10 themselves. The till payments will all match up, they just have to hope the customer doesn't remember the true figure when they see that $60 on their statement.
