In the painting by Raphael the two central figures are Plato and Aristotle. The painting is a collective portrait of all of the Greek Philosophers, some modeled after contemporaries of Raphael, such as Leonardo da Vinci (the Plato figure) and Michelangelo. Raphael was for some time employed as the architect of St Peter's in the Vatican, which was later continued by Michelangelo. Raphael was also in charge of the antique monuments in Rome.

Let us restrict ourselves to the Italian Renaissance painters. In the early Renaissance there are: Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca, Sandro Botticelli. In the High Renaissance we find some of the greatest artists ever known: the Florentines, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo; the Umbrian,Raphael; and the Venetians -- Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese.
