∙ 14y agoStained glass patterns are very much like quilting patterns or marquetry (making pictures from thin slices of veneer). Detail and shading mus t be sacrificed to the nature of the material.
Once you have chosen the picture or pattern you wish to use you must reduce it to simple areas of texture and/or colour that you can duplicate in glass. It is necessary to consider the fineness of detail that can be easily cut from the glass which in turn depends on whether you cut the class with a cutter or a diamond saw.
You must also consider the dark areas to be provided by the lead came or foil. This also requires an allowance to be made in the size of the glass to allow the lead or foil to fit between the pieces.
Once the picture is reduced to simple shapes and transferred to a piece of paper (full size) you cut glass in the same shapes and build up the aret.
The glass is bonded together with came or foil.
If came is used it is best to set the glass firmly in the channel with some type of mastic.
Church stained glass windows "cheat" to some degree. The ones with saints etc. use glass with painted glass for faces, hands etc. which are cut out and put together like a jigsaw puzzle. However once the glass is cut, the actual assembly into a finished whole is the same.
