A frame structure is a structure that is made out of other different things.

For example your skeleton is made of all different bones and muscles.

A solid structure is a structure that has little or no air in the structure.

For example a hockey puck has little or no air into it

A shell structure has a moulded shape around it.

For example a basket ball is a shell structure by having a moulded shape around it.

What is a shell structure?

Structures, which keep their shape and support loads, even without a frame, or solid mass material inside, are called shell structures. These structures use a thin, carefully shaped, outer layer of material, to provide their strength and rigidity. The shape of a shell structure spreads forces throughout the whole structure, which means every part of the structure supports only a small part of the load, giving it its strength. Examples include: igloos, egg cartons, turtle shell, food or pop cans, or, even bubbles in foam and cream puffs.

How is a solid different from a frame?

In a frame the structure is not continuous throughout the panels of the building, but is in connected lines of structure that form a frame. For example in timber framed buildings: the timber is a structural frame that does not completely fill in the walls, roof and floor. These are clad over and lined within the framing to form panels. The framing bears the structural loads. In concrete or brick masonry construction: the walls are formed by the masonry units being put together to form solid walls. This means the loads of the building are distributed throughout the entire wall.

What are the functions of a frame structure?

The Eiffel tower and a bike are some. Frame structures are not necessarily only things made of metal and those kind of materials, but also everyday structures like a bed, a chair or a window. A frame structure is something that is made up of a variety of materials that consists of a frame and is filled in from that.
