depends what kind of art person you are. you need the visuals to make abstract art.

"Abstract Expressionism" by Barbara Hess (ISBN-13: 978-3836513852) Also has a good rating The are multiple books written about abstract arts. There is a book "Abstract Art(World of Art)" by Anna Moszynska that is a good source of information on abstract art.
It depends on what you're going to be painting. I did my art lessons with a woman who only painted animals, landscapes, fruit and flowers. For these you'll probably need colours like those in the Georgian oil collection, which have 6-8 in each pack. They're quite pricey but it's decent paint and the tubes are a reasonable size. If you're looking to do abstract art then I guess more brighter colours will be needed. You can always mix colours to get those that you want.
