Both Igbo culture and Okonkwo's life lie in ruins at the end of the book. Though both are once proud, they are forced to realize their end. Okonkwo chooses to end it early as oppose to suffer, but the Igbo culture faces a sure steady decline into obscalescence.

The villagers believe in superstition, including the killing of twins.

There is no central leader among the 9 villages, leading to a military structure which is weakened and divided.

Men kill other men if their gods deem it necessary.

It is a mostly agrarian society and thus vulnerable to famines and other agrarian problems.
