Although the dimensions of a house will vary between designs, there are some dimensions to consider. For a typical home design there will be eight foot ceilings in the living area. Some homes may have high open ceilings of 16 feet. There is usually nine or ten foot ceilings in the garage. It depends on the design wanted.

Kitchens will need approximately three feet of space or more between cabinets/appliances to allow fee movement while cooking or cleaning. Think of how much space is between you or another cabinet when doors are opened. Lower Cabinets are typically 24" deep.

Bathrooms are usually a minimum of five feet wide (for tub length) and long enough to meet local code distances between the toilet, sink, or tub. There really is no set floor plan other than what is dictated by building code.

I like to design a living room to be a minimum of 500 square feet (20'x25'). This allows room for furniture and people to move about without feeling crowded. Consider your (or the clients) needs when designing living space.

Bedrooms and other rooms should be large enough to accommodate beds, chairs, dressers, cabinets, etc. It's good to conserve space but not good to feel boxed in.

Some areas, such as the utility closet, will have to be sized according to building code. There must be enough room to allow for heating units, hot water tanks, duct work, etc.

Always weigh design style against cost and energy conservation. These will also determine house dimensions.

Overall the dimensions of a house will depend on the needs of the residents. For a three bedroom home with 1-1/2 baths, kitchen, dining, living room, and den you may want to have a total living area of 1,800 square feet or more. The dimensions can be more or less, depending on the life style of the residents.
