Arethusa was a follower of Artemis who vowed chastity like the goddess. One day, the river-god named Alpheus fell in love with her and started to chase her. He was about to catch her but, she called to Artemis for help. The goddess changed her into a stream. Alpheus then turned himself into a river and attempted to mingle his waters with the stream. Before he could do so, Artemis dammed him up and left him in thwarted flood.
