You can use rubbing alchohal and nail polish remover. Just boil them afterwards. :)
Almost all paint stores sell small bags of crushed walnut shell for this. It blends and sticks better than sand.
To make a shell, you could take large bowl and paper mache over it. Then once it hardens, you can paint it to look like a shell. If you are able to sew, you can use some felt and sew the pieces together and stuff the inside.
